"The Brain Runs the Show": Matt DeWild Wows the Club with an Interactive Look at Human Optimization
At our weekly meeting on July 27, 2026, Rotary Club of Davenport member Matt DeWild took the floor with a presentation that lived up to its name — "The Brain Runs the Show" — and, by the end, had more than a few members seeing their own bodies in a whole new way.
Matt's talk explored a simple but powerful idea: that the brain is the command center for nearly everything the body does, from movement and balance to how we feel and function day to day. Rather than lecture from a slide deck, Matt made the session interactive, walking the room through live demonstrations that showed just how directly the brain influences the body.
Using 3D brain mapping, Matt illustrated how different regions of the brain govern different functions — and then took it a step further, guiding audience members through exercises that let them feel the connection for themselves. Members watched (and in some cases experienced firsthand) how small, targeted inputs could change the way their bodies responded, improving things like balance, range of motion, and control in real time.
The central message was an optimistic one: by balancing and regulating the brain, human optimization is possible. When the brain is working well, the body follows — and Matt showed that these aren't abstract concepts reserved for specialists, but principles that everyday people can understand and put to use.
It was exactly the kind of program that makes our weekly meetings so valuable — informative, hands-on, and genuinely mind-opening. Thank you, Matt, for sharing your expertise and reminding us that when it comes to how we move, feel, and perform, the brain really does run the show.
