The Outing Club is closed for the month of February so the Davenport Rotary is headed on the road with the Putnam Museum as our first destination.

“I had no idea!”  This is the statement we hear often from visitors to The Putnam these days.

Beginning as the Davenport Academy of Science in 1867 and becoming the Putnam Museum of History and Natural Science when it opened on Museum Hill in 1963, it is now the Putnam Museum & Science Center.

The Science Center is comprised of more than 40 hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) experiences.  It opened after a $2.2 million renovation of 1/3 of the Putnam’s exhibit space.  More than 30,000 students and teachers from nearly 100 school districts visit the Putnam annually.  Knowing that 85% of people learn best by doing, the new Science Center is important to our young people and our economic future as it highlights various careers in STEM fields, inspiring our students to be interested and perform well in Science and Math coursework.

On January 31, Alien Worlds and Androids will open at the Putnam featuring Science Fiction and Science Fact about our search for life beyond our planet.  The National Partner for the Exhibit is NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.  Journey to Space 3D also opens Saturday and is a wonderful companion to the exhibit as it reflects upon the Space Shuttle program and gives us insight into the future of our space program.

Join us on Monday, February 2 at the Putnam Museum.  Kim Findlay, President/CEO of the Putnam Museum & Science Center will update the club on the latest developments at the museum.

Prior to joining the Putnam, Kim spent 14 years with the United Way of the Quad Cities where she served as President from 1995-2004.  She received her bachelor’s in Business Administration from Marycrest College and has completed post graduate work in Non-Profit Management at St. Ambrose University.

She is married to Rick Brackey and has three adult stepchildren and six grandchildren.  She resides in Durant with her husband and two Golden Retrievers – Harley and Ella.
