Liz McDermott worked as an LPN in Neonatology, private practice Pediatrics and then Obstetrics and Gynecology until "retiring" from nursing in 1996. She was called back to nursing on a medical mission to Haiti in 2002. Since then she has become very involved with what has now become the non- profit, ServeHAITI, traveling there at least twice a year. Liz serves on the Board of Directors and is the Volunteer Corp and Trips Coordinator Committee Chair. Liz is married to Tom McDermott and has 3 grown sons.
Serve HAITI believes in the core values of respect, dignity, collaboration, and sustainability. They adopt a community-centric approach and work jointly with their Haitian counterparts to address issues of access and quality of care. Their major projects include: potable water, microfinance, education, kitchen & incenerator, and infrastructure. The Haitian team is comprised of the Haitian medical director, twenty-two community healthcare workers, two social workers, Gift of Water technicians and support personnel, a local contractor, and a water committee.
