Introduction-Randy Brown

Randy Brown is a national author, keynote speaker, and coach. Randy is a national expert on the topics of networking, leadership, team building, and adversity. In his coaching career he reached the highest level in men's college basketball at the NCAA level.  His 18-year career includes Iowa State, Marquette, Arizona, and Miami of Ohio. Naismith Hall of Famer Lute Olson at the University of Arizona mentored Randy. His book, Rebound Forward, Rebound from Life’s Most Devastating Losses and Stay in the Game, highlights his rise in the college coaching world as well as failure, adversity, and tragedy. He is a role model for resilience in the face of life’s most devastating circumstances. A Fort Dodge native, he has two daughters, Claire and Jane, and lives in Ames, Iowa.

Steven Bahls has been president of Augustana College (Illinois) for thirteen years.   Augustana is a liberal arts and sciences college in Rock Island, Illinois.  He has also served as dean of Capital University Law School in Columbus, Ohio, associate dean and professor of University of Montana School of Law and as a practicing lawyer in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  He taught corporate law and published many scholarly articles about corporate governance.  As a law professor, he taught in Canada, Germany, Greece and China.

He has written extensively about higher education and shared governance in Trusteeship, AGB Blog, Washington Post, Chronicle of Higher Education, Huffington Post and Inside Higher Ed.  He is the author of the best-selling book, SHARED GOVERNANCE IN TIMES OF CHANGE: A PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES, published in 2014 by AGB Press.   He wrote much of this book during his recent sabbatical, which he spent in the arctic regions of Canada. 

He is a consultant for the Association of Governing Boards, working with higher education institutions across the United States to improve shared governance in order to create the alignment necessary for outstanding educational outcomes.

He is a graduate of the University of Iowa and earned his J.D. at Northwestern University, where he was Head Executive Editor of the Northwestern University Law Review.

President Bahls is serving on or has served on the boards of several national organizations including the Council of Independent Colleges, National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, Lutheran Education Conference of North America and University of Montana School of Law Board of Visitors.  He is chair of the board of the Putnam Museum and Science Center.  He is also the vice chair of the board of the Federation of Illinois Independent Colleges and Genesis Health Systems.
